Hsi Lai Buddhist Center - Hacienda Heights, California

This amazingly scenic Buddhist center in the hills south of Los Angeles is not only very open to visitors, but welcomes them warmly. It's a great place to learn about Buddhism and Chinese traditions. The architecture and artwork are phenomenal, particularly on and in the temple. Free guided tours and self-guided audio tours of the grounds are available, and the dining hall offers a delicious vegetarian meal for a modest cost. The complex also includes a tea room, bookstore, and art gallery. An especially busy and festive place during Chinese New Year celebrations.

Open daily 9 to 5. Guided tours at 1:00 p.m. on weekends. Audio tours available every day.
