At 1,530 ft (466 m), this Acadia National Park landmark is the highest point on the Atlantic coast and rewards visitors with great views in all directions. It's reached by the 3.5 mile Summit Road, a scenic drive with numerous opportunities to pull over and have stroll. Once you reach the top, there are a number of easy trails across the glacier-smoothed granite peak and its meadows of subalpine plants.

This is the first place on the eastern seaboard to see the sun rise from October to March so set your alarm, fill the flask with coffee and get here early - the car park is frequently full to overflowing by the crowds waiting to capture this photogenic moment. Sunsets can be just as spectacular - and busy!
