At 420 feet / 42 stories high, this award-winning bridge is the tallest occupied structure in Maine and the tallest bridge observatory in the world. Opened in 2007, it incorporates an elevator that whisks you to the top for spectacular 360 degree views of the Penobscot River and surrounding countryside. The west bank of the Penobscot River is also the location of historic Fort Knox, built in 1844 as defence against any future incursions by the British navy.

      If you go:
Entry to the Bridge and Observatory is via Fort Knox and tickets cover both attractions (Fort Only rates are also available). Opening hours are 9:00 to sunset from May 1 to October 31.
