Here in the heart of tornado country, this national center at the University Of Oklahoma employs about 500 scientists to monitor the weather using the latest technology. Public tours are offered several times a week, with a guide showing off the tornado monitoring room and the storm chaser vehicles. The operations are explained in lay terms so anyone can understand.

      If you go:
Tours are 75 minutes long, and although they are free, they must be booked in advance. Guides, who are generally students, may vary considerably in their level of knowledge and their skill as tour guides, so if you're really interested in meteorology, you might find it worthwhile to take the tour more than once. There is also a nearby National Weather Museum which charges admission.
