• Fort Yargo State Park - Winder, Georgia

This beautiful state park is excellent for hiking, biking, boating, fishing and swimming. It also has a fine campground, with RV spaces, cabins and yurts. And there are two additional features that make it stand out. One is its campground sector called Camp Will-A-Way, designed especially for visitors with special needs. The other is Fort Yargo itself. This is a log fortification built in 1792 to protect settlers against hostile members of the Cherokee and Creek tribes. It is the site of periodic historical enactments by the Fort Yargo Living History Society.

      If you go:
Open year-round, though some activities and services are curtailed during winter. A day pass to the park costs 5 dollars. The park is open daily until 10 PM in warmer months and until 5 PM in winter.
