The property that was home to a U.S. Air Force base from the 1940s to 1993 has been developed as a residential area, a shopping center, and other establishments. But this little park pays tribute to the men and women who served here with a memorial wall and several plaques that map out the locations of the base's various facilities, and highlights its role in significant historical events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis. There's also an exhibit of several vintage fighter aircraft from the era, and a good place for viewing plane takeoffs and landings at Myrtle Beach Airport.
If you go:
The park is open daily during daylight hours, and there is no admission. Exhibits of memorabilia from the base can be found at the Base Recreation Center at 800 Gabreski Lane; the Crabtree Gym at 1004 Crabtree Lane; and Whispering Pines Golf Course Clubhouse, 2112 S. Kings Highway in North Myrtle Beach.
