The Carolina Shag, a dance similar to the swing, developed in this community in the 1940s, and it still has an avid following. And Fat Harold's has been the epicenter of shag culture ever since it opened in 1962. With free shag classes, frequent dance sessions with DJ's and lots of special events on two dance floors, the club attracts lovers of the shag in particular, and of dancing and music in general, from all over. The class sessions are very thorough so beginners can pick them up, and include a discussion of the fascinating local history of the shag and the African-American music that spawned it. The music played is mostly oldies, and the food served (the specialty is the Fried Bologna Sandwich) and general atmosphere of the club also evoke a bygone era. Although alcohol is served on premises, the dances and events are family-friendly and all ages are welcome.

      If you go:
Open daily and nightly with varied hours. For New Year's there is a four day celebration, but be sure to buy tickets in advance. And yes, Harold's is just a short stroll to the beach.
