• Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station - Rodanthe, North Carolina

      Opened in 1874, this life-saving station was the launching point for many bold and successful rescues of the passengers of stranded ships, inspiring modern Coast Guard operations. Now serving as a museum with exhibits detailing how the rescue crews lived and worked, the station is also the home of special events, including demonstrations by Coast Guard personnel of the rescue drills that were practiced here a century ago.

      If you go:
      Open Monday through Friday 10 to 5, April to November. The station hosts a presentation about the local filming of the movie Nights In Rodanthe.
