• Wompatuck State Park - Hingham, Massachusetts

Close to Boston and the bay, Wompatuck State Park is a rustic getaway with a campground, fishing and trails for hiking and biking in the summer or snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter. Additionally, there are three special features that make the park worth a visit. First, there is a free kayak tour, with all equipment provided, on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Second, the park contains a natural spring where you can fill jugs with mineral water for free. And finally, the park has a quasi-hidden history as an ammunition depot during World War II and the Cold War. There are many remnants of this installation in the park and you can uncover them on your own or, if you have a bicycle and helmet, take a free guided tour that points them out.

      If you go:
Camping season is mid-May through Mid-October. Many campsites have electricity. Fresh water, showers and a dump station are also available.
