Step back into the 19th century in this small town where about 400 original buildings still line the streets. Once a bustling seaport when travel and trade in Maine was primarily done by ship, the town still retains the flavor of its historic industries; shipping, lime burning and operating the Maine State Prison from 1824 to 2002. The 25 plaques on the walking tour are positioned as closely as possible to the spot where the original photographer had stood when taking the pictures more than 125 years ago.
If you go:
The Town Office, the Thomaston Public Library and several shops on Main Street have brochures available. A map is also posted on the side wall of the Thomaston Cafe and Bakery on the corner of Main and Knox Street. No admission; street parking.
