• Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally - Binghamton, New York

Reputedly the third largest hot air balloon festival in the nation actually started in 1983 because of an argument over who had the best recipe for spiedie (a type of marinated meat). Today, the event draws more than 100,000 attendees over a 3-day weekend each August to witness or participate in flights of hot air balloons from all over the world, as well as partake of food, big name entertainment and other activities. And yes, there's still a competition for the best spiedie.

      If you go:
The event is held in Otsiningo Park. There is no parking at the site, but a shuttle is available from the paid parking lot at nearby SUNY Broome. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No backpacks, large bags or coolers permitted. You can watch early morning balloon launches up close for free, before the festival officially opens.
