Probably the most photographed landmark in Duluth, the Aerial Lift Bridge raises and lowers around 26 times a day, allowing bulk carriers and pleasure craft to pass along the Duluth Ship Canal. Built in 1905, it originally ferried people and vehicles across in a suspended gondola car; it was converted into a lift bridge in 1929. The roadway weighs in at 917 tons, is 386 feet wide, and rises to 135 feet above the canal.

      If you go:
The bridge is located in Duluth's busy Canal Park district, a magnet for visitors with its shops, bars, restaurants and hotels. Visit at night and the entire structure is floodlit.
