In many ways, this is just what you'd expect of North Dakota's State Museum: dinosaurs, Native peoples, and the arrival of the Europeans. But from the moment you enter this striking building in the grounds of the State Capitol, you know it's a cut above the rest, a center that so packed with interactive exhibits, artifacts, specimens, and high-tech displays that the hours slip by without you noticing. In short, a brilliant museum, among the best of its size anywhere in the country.

      If you go:
Allow half a day for your visit, preferably more. There's an excellent cafe too, and an upmarket store. Opening hours are Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; Sat-Sun 10am-5pm. The center is closed Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
