• Rough Riders, Medora - Medora, North Dakota

There are plenty of places to stay in the busy little town of Medora, just outside the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, but only one if you're looking for a mix of history, luxury and great dining. Built in 1884 and renamed in honor of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders and their contribution to the successful (from America's point of view at least) Spanish-American War, the Rough Riders Hotel is jewel in Medora's crown, a place that balances western character with modern day facilities.

      If you go:
Theodore's Dining Room is the Rough Riders in-house restaurant. The menu is traditional western - ribeye, tenderloin, walleye, that kind of thing - but it's all done very well and the service is superb.
