• Hotel Alex Johnson - Rapid City, South Dakota

So enamoured was railroad man Alex C Johnson with this part of South Dakota that in 1928 he opened the grand hotel that carries his name. Standing 10 stories tall and featuring a large name sign on the roof, the hotel dominates Rapid City's downtown skyline (and offers great views from its rooftop bar). The Alex Johnson has welcomed six presidents and dozens of film stars over the years, including Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant who stayed here in 1958 while filming North By Northwest.

      If you go:
Take a close look at the bricks in the lobby and the huge chandelier that hangs above. Notice a symbol that looks disconcertingly like a swastika? It's actually an ancient symbol that means "the four sacred corners of the earth" and was adopted by Native Americans hundreds of years ago.
