      This impressive facility - built in 1989 on bluff overlooking the state capitol - houses three permanent galleries that tell the story of the state from the culture of Native tribes, through the arrival of miners, homesteaders and the military, through to the 21st century. There are full scale dramas, interactive displays and a whole range of historic artifacts, with something to interest visitors of all ages.

      If you go:
      Be sure to see Sitting Bull's buffalo skull (pictured), which was placed on a medicine pole for the Ghost Dance at Standing Rock Reservation.
