Lake Laberge - Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Lake Labarge is a popular recreation area for White Horse residents and visitors alike. It is also the setting for the fictional stories and poems written by Robert William Service about life in the Yukon at the turn of the 20th century.

If you go:
The Klondike Highway (Canada Highway 2) runs very near Lake Leberge as you approach the city of Whitehorse from the north, but the highway does not touch the shoreline. The lake is actually a widening of the Yukon River, which spreads to a width of two to five km for a distance of nearly fifty km. forming a significant body of water. There is a Robert Service Memorial in downtown Whitehorse, at 2nd Ave and Main Street, with a commemorative plaque in memory of this Englishman whose poetry came to represent the soul and the rugged spirit of the Yukon.
