For one of the most scenic - and easily accessible - North Carolina waterfalls, stop along U.S. Highway 276 at Looking Glass Falls. It was so named because water freezes on its sides in the winter and then glistens in the sunlight like a mirror or looking glass. The 60-foot falls are visible from the top, halfway down and at the bottom with the best photo ops at the lower level.
If you go:
A pull-off on the right, off U.S. 276, about 5 miles past the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, allows you to walk to the head of the stairs with a view of the falls. The town of Brevard with services is 10 miles from the falls. Cradle of Forestry in America, the first school of forestry in the United States, is about 6 miles west on U.S. 276.
