This museum has a collection of about 3 million specimens taken from the worlds of paleontology, paleobotany, geology, botany, entomology, ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology, and mammalogy. Fossils in the collection represent more than 100,000 vertebrates and more than 300,000 invertebrates. It also has the largest collection of fossil plants in the world. Kansas has rich deposits of fossils from western Kansas and the museum has rotating exhibits.

Entrance fee required. Call ahead or visit the website for traveling exhibits, always notable. The museum is part of the Fort Hays State University and the nearby campus is also worth a visit, as is the fort, which was featured in the movie, Dances With Wolves.
