Fort Mandan is a brilliant full-scale reconstruction of the fort at which the Lewis and Clark party spent the winter of 1804-05 (with the invaluable support of the local Mandan-Hidatsa Indians) and where, on February 11, 1805, Sacagawea gave birth to her son Jean-Baptiste. Each room is kitted out as it would have been over 200 years ago and well-informed guides are on hand to provides the insights into the party's time there.

      If you go:
Take a stroll by the majestic Missouri River, just a stone's throw from the gates of the fort.

Fort Mandan is about a mile down the road from the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center near Washburn. It's beautifully done, though our guide told us (in July 2014) that they aren't absolutely sure that this was where the Fort actually was located. The exact location was not pinpointed, and 30 years after the fact, Charbonneau could not be sure when they went looking for it.
