Built in 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse has witnessed many historic events, including a civil rights movement in the 1060's to desegregate the beach it overlooks. The lighthouse also survived some heavy damage from Hurricane Katrina. You can learn more about the lighthouse and the city's history at the adjacent visitors center, in a reconstructed version of a historic Southern mansion that stood on the site before being destroyed by Katrina. The center features an extensive free museum, complete with audio tour, showcasing the colorful heritage of Biloxi. It's particularly interesting to learn about how the lighthouse had so many female keepers.
If you go:
The visitors center is open every day from 8:00 to 5:00. The lighthouse is available to tour every morning for a nominal fee. Both attractions are only minutes away from Biloxi's casinos.
