Bend is the mother lode of vacation destinations. Bend got its name from the early pioneers, because it was the only place where they could cross the Deschutes River for miles. It was originally called "Farewell Bend" for that shallow bend in the river. Today, Bend is the largest city in central Oregon, and its main commerce is tourism, because within easy reach are camping, hiking, white-water rafting, skiing, rock climbing, fishing and paragliding.
If you go:
Bend is within fifty miles of five state parks and one national park and even has its own extinct volcano within city limits, Pilot Butte.
