• Eureka Mine, Death Valley - Furnace Creek, California

This remote hillside site is where prospector Pete Aguereberry after whom the dramatic viewpoint further up the road is named mined for gold for 40 years. Stone buildings, timber structures and a section of rail track still remain, making this a great place for photography. The mine itself is open to the public at times but may be closed in order to protect endangered Townsend big-eared bats; check with the Park Service for details.

      If you go:
If you're intending to explore the mine workings, NPS advice is to take two flashlights; one for use and one for backup.
