For the railroad buff or anyone who just enjoys a leisurely weekend train ride, the Niles Canyon Railway is like a trip back in time, to an era when trains played a more crucial role in public transportation. Climb aboard a vintage car pulled by a steam or diesel engine, and take a brief ride between Sunol and Fremont's historic Niles district, the early home of Charlie Chaplin's silent filmmaking company. Enjoy food and beverage along the way if you wish - you may bring your own or purchase items on board. You'll hear informative narration about the history of the area, and see remnants of a storied past.

      If you go:
Trains operate every Sunday during peak season, and during the rest of the year on the first and third Sundays, with three departure times from Sunol and two from Niles. Steam engines run at selected times, and the remaining trips are run by diesel engines. You can charter a caboose or even an entire train for your special event. There is a Train Of Lights at Christmas time, and you can take a wine train for Valentine's Day.

There are also wine tastings at other times besides Valentine's Day -- 5 of them are scheduled for the summer.
