• Hurricane River Cave/ Extreme Cave Tour - Western Grove, Arkansas

The regular tour of Hurricane River Cave is fascinating enough, but for a really exhilarating expedition, try the extreme cave tour, which entails about 4 hours of exploration, most of it in territory that the general public never sees. You'll climb, crawl, squeeze and wade your way through challenging passages and get an up-close glimpse of amazing formations and features, as well as the skeleton of a 14-year-old Native American boy that has been at home in the cave for 8000 years. If you're reasonably fit and have a sense of adventure, and don't mind tight spaces and muck, this is an experience you'll be talking about for years. The regular tour is self-guided, but the extreme tour is in the hands of an experienced guide.

      If you go:
Wear clothing and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty, and perhaps even discarding afterward, as the clay can be difficult to clean off. You will get not only very dirty but also very wet, which means you could get really chilly in the winter. A hot shower is available after the tour, though you'll probably have to stand in line for it, so you may want an extra change of old clothing to keep you warm and dry while you wait if you're taking a tour in winter. The advantage of winter tours, however, is that groups are much smaller. Helmets, knee pads, headlights and waterproof gloves will be provided if you don't have your own. It is impractical to carry any personal items that aren't very small. This includes water bottles and many cameras. Make certain your camera is compact, waterproof, and secure.
