Many visitors to the Columbia River Gorge miss one of the best sights nearby, mainly because it is so remote and so little known. The gorge has so many waterfalls, hiking trails, parks and overlooks that few people realize that Larch Mountain to the south provides some spectacular views of the high peaks near that area. Stop at the Vista House on Crown Point and ask the personnel for a map and directions to Sherrard Point Overlook. It is reached by a scenic mountain road about fifteen miles long that starts about a mile away. On a clear day, you can see five snow-capped peaks, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. The farthest distant, Mount Rainier, is 97 miles away, but still looks magnificent. Mount Hood, the closest at 22 miles, appears to be right next to you by comparison.

      If you go:
Only go to this overlook if the sky is clear, or clouds are high with no precipitation forecast. There are no facilities, but picnic tables are available by the parking lot. Bring water. The overlook is about 15 miles from the main highway and there is a short hike from the parking lot.
