The Crystal River NWR is a nature lover's paradise for many reasons, but the most enticing draw is the chance to view manatees up close. The clear, warm and often shallow water provides excellent opportunities to approach these large but gentle creatures who sometimes make their way upriver from the ocean. There are plenty of local establishments where you can rent kayaks and snorkeling gear, and even take manatee viewing tours.

      If you go:
The best time to observe manatees is in the winter. The water is warm, but a wetsuit is still a good idea for lengthy exposure. And don't forget the underwater camera.
