The Black Hawk State Historic Site pays tribute to the Sauk Indian nations, including those led by Chief Blackhawk, who lived on Rock Island. The site features a small, but well-done museum with models of winter and summer homes used by the Native American peoples. There is also a scale model of the Indian village of Saukenuk, one of the largest Native American cities in North America dating rom the mid-1700's through the Blackhawk War.

      If you go:
The Black Hawk Forest Preserve is adjacent to the historic site. It covers more than 200 acres of forest and prairie lands with several trails for hiking, biking, and birdwatching.
