Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace and Museum - Wytheville, Virginia

A descendant of Pocahontas, Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Edith Bolling was born in this house in 1872. The daughter of a judge and then a businesswoman, she became one of the most influential of first ladies when she married president Woodrow Wilson. She is sometimes called The Silent President or The First Woman President because she was discreetly instrumental in helping the president perform his duties after his stroke. This modest museum showcases some of her effects, as well as photographs and documents, and its cordial staff will fill you in on some fascinating tidbits of local history. At present time, the museum comprises only a portion of the first floor, but plans are underway to restore the entire two-story building.
