• Jonathon Dickinson State Park/Trapper Nelson's - Hobe Sound, Florida

Located on the Loxahatchee River near Stuart, Jonathon Dickinson State Park offers all the fun you'd expect from a Florida state park, including camping, fishing and hiking. But a unique reason to visit is the chance to explore the homestead of Trapper Nelson, an eccentric figure who captured and exhibited wild animals during the Forties and Fifties. He also died, an apparent suicide, on the property, fueling reports that the place is haunted. The site is accessible only by boat, either via a ranger's guided tour or a self-guided tour using a rented boat.

      If you go:
Open every day of the year. For non-campers, the park closes at sundown. Cabins are available for overnight rental.
