While most famous today as the former home of President Dwight D Eisenhower, Abilene started out as one of the wildest cattle towns in the West. The first great drives up the Chisholm Trail to Joseph McCoy's stockyards in Abilene started in 1867 and more than a million head of longhorn arrived here over the next five years. This history is the focus of Old Abilene Town, a reconstructed main street and collection of historic buildings.

Attractions throughout the summer season include gunfights on the street, can-can dancers in the saloon and excursions along the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad pulled by the only operating steam locomotive in Kansas.
