Palo Duro Canyon owes its existence as a state park to the work of the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) who worked from 1933 to 1937 to develop the road and facilities that are still in use today. These include three rustic, stone-built cabins built on the rim, offering unforgettable views both of the canyon itself and of the stunningly clear night skies. The Sorenson is the largest of the three, with its own deck.

      If you go:
Facilities are basic but include modern heating and a/c, restroom and shower, beds and bedding, plus refrigerator and microwave. A charcoal grill is also provided outside but their use is banned at periods of high fire risk.
