The Battle of Prairie Grove was the last major Civil War battle to take place in north west Arkansas. Intense and brutal, it ended in stalemate with hundreds of dead and wounded on both sides. The site today is extremely well preserved, right down to the rebuilt Borden House that was the location of some of the fiercest exchanges. Familiarise yourself with the history of the battle via the excellent displays at the visitor centre, then explore battlefield on a picturesque walking tour and/or a 6-mile self guided driving tour.
If you go:
The site is also home to a number of historic pre-Civil War structures including houses, church, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and out-buildings typical of mid 1800s Arkansas.
