This fascinating landscape was created more than 4000 years ago as part of a series of lava flows that today cover the Snake River Plain. Hell's Half Acre is something of a misnomer - the area actually extends across 222 square smiles or 162,000 acres. Take a walk and, depending on the time of year, you'll come across wildflowers, geraniums, prickly pear cactus, sagebrush and ancient juniper trees, all thriving in the deep fissures of this seemingly inhospitable lava field.

      If you go:
There are three trails to follow: two are accessible walks with interpretive signs, the third is a more challenging primitive trail marked by poles across the lava.
