Nestled between the Pensacola Naval Air Station at Sherman Field and the Bayou Grande is a very unusual store and bamboo garden. Unlike traditional nurseries, the plants here tend to be full-grown plants and they can found on curving paths. The owner originally created this garden as memorial to his wife and mother and the property features over 350 types of bamboo plants and several hundred types of tropical plants including gingers, ear plants, banana plants and ornamental grasses. Visitors are encouraged to wander the paths at their leisure. The garden also attracts a diverse group of birdlife and visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras.
If you go:
The National Aviation Museum is only a few minutes away and well worth a visit. In past years, the Navy encouraged visitors to watch the Blue Angels practice their aerial maneuvers, but those official practice sessions have been cut due to budget constraints. However, it is still possible to see F/A-18 Hornet jets practicing in the area.
