The most famous landmark on the east side of Zion National Park is Checkerboard Mesa, a geological wonder that towers 900 feet above the highway. The horizontal and vertical fissures that cross-cross the mountain creating a checkerboard effect are the result of a combination of the layers of sand that formed the mesa in the first place, and cracks caused by stress and erosion.

      If you go:
There is a 2-mile round trip trail to the top; the steepness makes it a strenuous walk but also means it's quite likely you will have it to yourself.
