Although there is some dispute about the matter, this gargantuan ball of twine lays claim to being the largest in the world, or at least the largest constructed by one person. That man, Francis A. Johnson, wound it up for 4 hours every day over a period of 29 years (1950-1979). It's now on display in a glass-encased gazebo in the heart of Darwin, next to a free museum devoted to Johnson's monumental achievements (he made other large items as well).

      If you go:
The second Saturday in August is a good time to go, because that's when the town celebrates Twine Days. Before you go, be sure you've heard the Weird Al Yankovic song 'Greatest Ball of Twine in Minnesota'. The museum is open 'most of the time' during the summer, and you can call to arrange a tour in the winter.
