Two things make the Laura Plantation stand out from the many other antebellum homes that compete for the visitor's dollar in this part of Louisiana. The first is the styling - in particular the brightly coloured paintwork - of the Big House, clearly marking it as Creole. The second is the restored slave cabin in which the ancient west-African tales of Compair Lapin, better known in English as Br'er Rabbit, were recorded.

It's not the cheapest visit - particularly if you're taking in the equally expensive Oak Alley Plantation virtually next door - but the 70 minute tour of the house, gardens and cabins is superb. Tours run throughout the day from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
