Baton Rouge replaced New Orleans as Louisiana's state capital in 1846 and this highly individual castle was erected as the state's new Capitol building. Designed in the style of a medieval castle, complete with turrets and crenellations, it's a building that divided opinions: Mark Twain descried it as "pathetic" that such a thing "should ever have built". The present Capitol building superseded it in 1932 and today the building houses the Museum of Political History.
