While every antebellum mansion has its own charm, Oakley House - the centrepiece of this picturesque historic site - should be on your must-see list. The house itself is tall, airy and attractively simple in style. Nearby stand a detached kitchen, slave cabins and a barn. For many visitors however, the most interesting aspect of this old plantation is that it was here that artist John James Audubon worked on 32 of his famous bird paintings while hired to teach drawing to the owners' daughter.
If you go:
Make time to explore the excellent museum; there's also a gallery and film presentation that details the history of the site in both general terms and also in relation to Audubon's time here.
