Okefenokee is an old native American word meaning "Land of the Trembling Earth." Take a boat trip deep into the bowels of this mysterious and fascinating swamp. You WILL see many alligators up close, as well as owls, turtles, sand hill cranes, and lots of other wildlife. Learn the history of how the park evolved out of a ill conceived plan to drain the swamp to create more farmland. Tour a genuine pioneer homestead with no electricity or running water and see how the early settlers in the area "roughed it".

      If you go:
Okefenokee NWR has 3 primary and 2 secondary entrances. The main entrance is located 11 miles southwest of Folkston, GA off Highway 121/23.
