This excellent museum, dedicated to the history of the Arkansas Delta, is split across two sites in historic downtown Helena. The Depot concentrates on the history of the region from prehistoric times to the present, explaining how the Mississippi River has shaped not only the land but also the people; there's also a floor dedicated to the Civil War. Over the road at the Visitors Center, just a block away, the focus is on the music - blues, gospel and rockabilly - of the Arkansas Delta.

      If you go:
Admission is free and the center is open Tues-Sat, 9 am - 5 pm King Biscuit Time, the longest running daily blues radio show in the US, is broadcast live from the Visitors Center every weekday, between 12.15 and 12.45 pm.
