For just six short years (from 1820-26), this was Alabama's state capital, a thriving city built on the banks of the Alabama River. Today, very little remains beyond the columns of one antebellum mansion, a few stones and wells, and the markers of two cemeteries. It doesn't sound like much but it's actually a fascinating archaeological site that really rewards a little exploration, whether by car, on foot or by bicycle.
If you go:
The site is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Admission is free but pick up a map from the guy in the welcome centre and make time for a chat: his enthusiasm and knowledge will help to bring things to life.
