Having been struck down by polio three years earlier, future President Franklin Delano Roosevelt first came to Warm Springs in 1924. The warm waters didn't provide a cure but such was his improvement that he bought the resort and helped turn it into a world-famous polio treatment centre. The original pools form the focal point of this state historic site; exhibits and displays tell its history.

      If you go:
The pools are empty these days but Labor Day is an exception. Plan your visit accordingly and it is still possible to experience the warm waters.
