During the Civil War, Rock Island was home to one of the largest POW camps in the Union. More than 12 thousand Confederate soldiers were stationed here, and nearly 2000 died. The cemetery is the only remaining piece of the prison. A cemetery for Union soldiers was also opened a short distance away for the Union Guards who died at the camp. It remains an active National Cemetery, where 25,000 American veterans are buried.

      If you go:
The cemeteries are located within the grounds of the Rock Island Arsenal, an active military facility. All visitors are required to present ID, and Non-US citizens should contact base security at least one week prior to visiting.
