      The small city of Shoshone owes its existence to two things, sheep and the railroad, and this history is plain to see. Four sets of rail tracks run through the center of town, leading to Shoshone's claim to have The World's Widest Main Street. Follow the self-guided walking tour of the city's historic buildings and you'll see mansions built for the railroad officials and sheep barons, some made from blocks cut from nearby lava flows.

      If you have the time, spend a few hours following the BLM driving tour (see link below) which starts and finishes in Shoshone. You'll visit historic sites, places of natural beauty, wildlife areas and Shoshone's famous Ice Caves, 17 miles north of the city.
