An early battle in the Civil War on this site helped determine the fate of Kentucky. Union Soldiers, lead by Col. James Garfield defeated the Confederates here in January 1862. The battle helped drive Confederate soldiers out of eastern Kentucky, and launched Garfield onto a path that would lead to him becoming the 20th President of the United States.

The Battlefield is a National Historic Landmark. It is free and features self guided walking tours of both the Union and Confederate sides of the battlefield.
