Not far from where the notorious Lincoln County War was fought, and where legendary outlaw Billy the Kid was supposedly killed, this museum pays tribute to American history, not only of the wild west days, but also of the early 20th century. There are artifacts from Billy's time, including his rifle, chaps and spurs, the original wanted poster, and even locks of his hair. There are also more than 150 guns, and several vintage automobiles.

      If you go:
Open every day during the summer, closed on Sundays during the winter. Billy the Kid reputedly is buried nearby, though the exact location of his grave is a matter of dispute.

The Billy the Kid Museum was fun, but I would not take a long detour to visit Fort Sumner. If driving US Hwy-60 across New Mexico, then this is a definite stop.
