White Sands Missile Range is a military testing range, the location of the first atomic bomb test and where, in 1949, the world entered the space age with the launch of a two-stage rocket that flew beyond the earth's atmosphere. There's an extraordinary outdoor display of more than 50 rockets and missiles, and a museum explaining the work of White Sands scientists like Dr. Wernher von Braun.

      If you go:
The Missile Park is open dawn to dark seven days a week. The museum is open all year round: weekdays 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, Saturdays 10.00 am to 3.00 pm (closed Sundays and Holidays).

I think a visit to White Sands National Monument is an absolute must if in the area. Great place for families to play on brilliant white sand dunes.
