Constructed over a period of 28 years (1923-1951), the Coral Castle was intended as a tribute to the fiancee who had jilted Latvian immigrant Ed Leedskalnin years earlier. (He called her 'Sweet Sixteen', a nickname that inspired the song by Billy Idol.) It turned out to be a marvel of modern engineering. Nobody witnessed the slightly built man actually working on the structure, but he evidently positioned and carved 1100 tons of coral by himself, some of which are fashioned into such items as a functioning telescope and rocking chair. You'll constantly wonder how he did it.
